Exploring the gender-climate-conflict nexus in conflict affected cross-border areas in the Horn of Africa

XCEPT Research Fund

Bodhi conducted formative research on the gender-climate-conflict nexus in two cross-border areas of Ethiopia, Kenya, and Somalia. The research examined the role of gender in mediating the impact of climate change on conflict dynamics and explored how climate change and conflict are shifting gender roles in the Mandera Triangle and the southwest Ethiopia-northwest Kenya border area, providing opportunities for women to play a greater role in environmental peacebuilding. It accomplished this using qualitative research methods, including a desk-based review and primary data collection through key informant interviews and focus group discussions. The study contributes to a stronger understanding of the intersection of gender, climate change, and conflict, offering implications for policy and programming in climate-affected cross-border conflict systems and informing more gender-responsive peacebuilding and climate policy.
