They will also work closely with Bodhi’s international team on data collection tools, the inception report, the preliminary findings presentation and the draft report.

Successful applicants will also join Bodhi’s consultant roster. Roster members are contracted on a project-by-project basis as further assignments arise.

National Consultant

National Consultants are subject-matter specialists who bring deep knowledge of Kenya and recognised expertise in one or more of our thematic areas. On this assignment, you will combine hands-on leadership of field data collection across 11 counties with close technical collaboration with Bodhi’s international project team, from tool design through to reporting.

  • Large-scale surveys and mixed-methods social research

Key responsibilities

  • Provide contextual expertise on Kenya’s social, governance and policy landscape as it relates to adolescent health, gender and WASH, including national and county systems
  • Contribute to the design and contextual adaptation of the methodology, sampling approach and data collection tools, and provide input to the inception report
  • Coordinate field data collection across 11 counties, including recruiting, training and managing enumerators and note-takers
  • Maintain gender balance within field teams, so that female enumerators are available to interview adolescent girls and women
  • Oversee quantitative survey data collection on digital platforms (for example KoboToolbox, SurveyCTO or ODK), including sampling implementation, routing and device management
  • Facilitate focus group discussions and conduct key informant interviews with national and county government officials, partners and civil society, using gender-sensitive and disability-inclusive approaches
  • Manage field logistics, including scheduling, venue identification, respondent mobilisation and movement planning
  • Carry out daily quality assurance, including spot-checks, back-checks, debriefs and review of submitted data
  • Ensure all data collection with adolescent girls and vulnerable populations meets ethical standards, informed consent and assent protocols, and safeguarding requirements
  • Give the project team real-time contextual and security updates, flagging risks and advising on mitigation
  • Contribute to analysis, the preliminary findings presentation and the draft report

Qualifications and experience

Essential

  • University degree in a relevant discipline (for example public health, gender studies, development studies, sociology, economics or a related social science)
  • Mixed-methods research expertise, with at least eight years’ experience in large-scale surveys, adolescent health, gender, WASH or related social research
  • Demonstrated experience conducting ethical, disability-inclusive research with adolescent girls and vulnerable populations

  • Established professional networks across government, civil society, academia and the development community in Kenya, including a mobilisable network of enumerators beyond the capital
  • Current residence in Kenya, with the ability to travel to all 11 counties

Desirable

  • Master’s degree in a relevant discipline
  • Knowledge of menstrual health, government sanitary-product programmes, and national and county systems (highly desirable)
  • A PhD or published research outputs in a relevant thematic area
  • Experience working with UN agencies, bilateral donors or INGOs
  • Experience managing data collection in remote or insecure areas
  • Knowledge of sampling methodologies and field-level quality control protocols
  • First aid, safety or security training relevant to fieldwork

General Requirements

  • Fluency in English, written and spoken. Knowledge of Kenya’s national and local languages is essential for community-level work and a strong advantage throughout.
  • Commitment to research ethics, informed consent, confidentiality and safeguarding
  • Reliability, attention to detail, and a commitment to high-quality, objective work
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a remote, multidisciplinary international team

What We Offer
