Job Description
About the Role
We are seeking a highly skilled, dynamic, and motivated leader to head our Gender & Inclusion research team. This individual will spearhead a growing team operating across the UK and Kenya to deliver impactful research and evaluation projects centred on gender and inclusion. The role is based in the UK and will be primarily remote, with two days in the office each week in London and three days working remotely. Candidates must have the right to work in the UK.
As the Head of Gender & Inclusion, you will oversee a team delivering short- to mid-term projects that explore the triple nexus of humanitarian aid, development, and peacebuilding. The team’s focus includes:
- Gender mainstreaming and promoting gender transformative programming
- Inclusion of marginalised groups, such as individuals with disabilities and diverse SOGIE (Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Expression).
- Conducting gender equity and social inclusion analysis and research and analysis on related topics .
- Delivering gender assessments and feminist programme evaluations
Our clients include intergovernmental organisations (e.g., the UN), international NGOs, and non-profit organisations. This role will also provide technical support to our Conflict & Peacebuilding research team and our Monitoring and Evaluation team through matrixed working methods and requires substantial travel (up to 2–3 months per year).
Key Tasks and Responsibilities
Research
- Lead, plan, and manage all stages of research and evaluation projects, including methodological design, implementation (qualitative and quantitative data collection), analysis, and reporting, ensuring high-quality deliverables that meet deadlines.
- Oversee multiple projects simultaneously, managing competing deadlines and internal resource requirements.
- Identify and tailor research designs and methodologies to address key questions and objectives.
- Integrate and adapt innovative research practices, participatory approaches, and tools relevant to development research.
- Upskill the Gender & Inclusion team and the wider research team on methodologies and approaches.
- Deliver in-person training, validation workshops, and dissemination events to clients, including gender mainstreaming training where required.
Project and Organisational Leadership
- Identify tenders and contribute to proposal development, including researching clients, programmes, and development topics.
- Build and maintain positive relationships with external stakeholders, including partner organisations, senior academics, and local CSOs.
- Contribute to Bodhi’s roster of consultants, enhancing research capacity.
- Support the development of internal processes, practices, and standards related to gender analysis and assessments.
- Contribute to thought leadership by writing blog posts and website content to elevate Bodhi’s external profile.
Team Management
- Manage the Gender & Inclusion research team, providing line management for 3 team members ranging from Senior Researchers to Research Assistants.
- Support team members’ personal and professional development through performance management and coaching.
Person Specification
Essential Qualifications and Experience
- Master’s degree in Gender Studies, Development Studies, International Relations, or a related discipline.
- Conceptual understanding of gender and inclusion concepts, including:
- Gender mainstreaming, socio-ecological models, and the gender equity continuum.
- Feminist research approaches and localisation in development research.
- Common gender assessment tools such as the UNFPA-UNICEF Gender-Transformative Accelerator Tool and CARE Gender Marker.
- Substantial experience (10+ years) in delivering gender analyses, assessments, or relevant research in fragile and conflict-affected settings (FCAS).
- Thematic expertise in gender, inclusion of marginalised groups, conflict, peacebuilding, climate change, governance, migration, or the triple nexus.
- Experience line-managing teams with varying levels of experience.
- Proven fieldwork experience in FCAS environments.
- Proficiency with data collection and analysis tools (e.g., SPSS, NVivo).
- Ability to work under pressure and adapt to tight deadlines.
- Fluency in English. Proficiency in Swahili, Spanish, French, or Arabic is desirable.
- Experience delivering research and evaluations, including quantitative data collection.
